  •  A disease is considered rare if it has a prevalence of fewer than 200,000 affected individuals in the United States at any given time. 

  • There are roughly 7,000 rare diseases currently identified.

  • 30 million people in the US are living with a rare disease which is about 10% of the population.  

  • 80% of rare diseases are genetic, meaning people have them their whole life  

  • Estimated 350 million people worldwide suffer from a rare disease.

    • If all the people with rare disease lived in a country together it would be the 3rd most populous country.

Rare Disease Day 

Rare Disease Day is a world-wide celebration every year on the last day of February. The day is filled with various events, much like my own, to celebrate rarity as well as raise awareness for rare diseases. This year (2016), Rare disease Day falls on February 29th.
